- Army’s “Fury” Tank Inspection System Ensures Accurate, Cost-Effective Assessment
“Fury,” a robotic crawler that moves inside an underground storage tank using magnetic wheels, is the Army’s latest answer to inspecting tanks accurately and cost effectively. Controlled by a tether and weighing about 25 pounds, it fits through an existing small-diameter pipe and conducts a thorough, nondestructive evaluation of a tank’s wall thickness. It is also being used to assess the condition of sheet pile.

With the help of a $3 million grant from the Office of Naval Research, two Midwestern university research engineers are probing the riddle underlying a mysterious diamond-coating technology. Their goal is to find a way to use the coating technology with materials other than diamonds.
