- Army Protects Hangars, Towers, and Tanks at Fort Campbell
The Army is testing new surface-tolerant and self-healing coatings at Fort Campbellhome of the 101st Airborne Division "Screaming Eagles." The project managers hope to protect steel aircraft hangars, flight control towers, and deluge tanks from paint failure and corrosion. Ongoing evaluations are revealing that these high-performance coatings will extend structure life by 30 years, reduce maintenance and downtime, and increase safety.
- Army Demonstrates Helicopter Rinse System at Wheeler Army Airfield
For several years the corrosion program manager at Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) has spearheaded a joint DoD effort to fund and install a unique system designed to rinse DoD helicopters. The system helps aircrews eliminate the corrosion that affects flight safety. On January 25, 2006, AMCOM and Wheeler Army Airfield officials unveiled the
first DoD joint Service helicopter water rinse system at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the airfield in Honolulu.
- Navy Wraps Up Inspection of Pipeline Connected to Red Hill Storage Facility
For 20 years the Navy has run clean diesel fuel at a high velocity through a 32-inch pipeline inside the tunnel connecting the Red Hill Fuel Storage tank farm to Naval Station Pearl Harbor fueling piers. During this period, the Navy has maintained the pipeline through visual inspections and external spot checks. For the first time in late November 2006, Navy experts examined the diesel fuel line internally using ultrasonic 'smart pig' technology. The inspection project presented a host of challenges for the Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center and VECO Federal, Inc., the main contractor.
