Coast Guard Responds to Hurricane Katrina

When Hurricane Katrina hit the U.S. Gulf Coast, it created an area of devastation the size of Great Britain—about 90,000 square miles. Five thousand Coast Guard personnel joined the national rescue effort, and they used one-third of the agency's aviation fleet to conduct their operations. In this photo essay, Lt. Commander Charles Hatfield presents highlights of what the Coast Guard's search-and-rescue operations involved after the hurricane hit.
